12/14/2023 0 Comments East ocean alameda dim sum menu![]() ![]() I liked it and recommend it for an adventure but, like my daughter, did not find it exceptional and worth the 20+ mile drive. My reluctance to be as impressed as some other reviewers is more likely the product of having a hopefully sophisticated palate and not being interested in a foodie "scene." Or maybe I am just grumpy. DO go for a taste of what a very good Dim Sum palace can be. Don't go for a chance to visit with friends, as the cacophony makes conversation without shouting impossible. To folks who don't come from places that can support extremely diverse ethnic restaurants, places like this are like visiting OZ, in the most positive sense. There were six in our party and the food was put before us very rapidly, requiring that we say "No, thank you" many, many times. The clientele the day we visited included many Asian, apparently Chinese, extended families. It is a huge facility, the staff is very attentive, which is necessary in eateries of this type, where rapid turnover is essential to the business plan. The food was quite good and there were some dishes not commonly seen at the excellent Contra Costa County dim sum place I frequent. We were literally first or near-first on-line at the 10 am opening. That perspective may change as we explore the menu further, but for now, it’s a pretty average “three-star” experience. One of my sons, who lives on the SF side of the Bay, asked that we celebrate his birthday here. ![]() At this point, based on our experience, it’s not a place we are likely to go out of our way to revisit. If you live on Alameda, or are visiting for other reasons and want some dim sum, then give it a try. Locally, we have been to dim sum places in Oakland’s Chinatown area, and in or near the Ranch 99 complex out in El Cerrito that we like as much or more, and so it will be a while before we revisit East Ocean Seafood Restaurant. ![]() We will probably return for a midweek lunch at some point in the future, mixing items on the dim sum and the lunch menus. Looking at the online lunch menu, there were a number of dishes I wish we had tried. We arrived at 12:20pm and the restaurant was 75 full, pretty good for a Tuesday. Their lunch hours are 11-2:30pm on weekdays and 10-2:30pm on weekends. I’m fond enough of dim sum that this is a place I would be willing to revisit, with a more targeted set of menu selections in mind. East Ocean is a family owned restaurant that has been serving authentic Hong Kong style cuisine in Alameda for over 30 years. From a food perspective, the items we ordered or selected may not represent the best that the restaurant has to offer. Have you ever been to a restaurant where there seems to be an abundance of wait staff, all moving, but none of them really paying much attention to the tables and customers. It was fine, but not a dish I would wait for again. It was different from anything I have had before. My wife was ready to ask for the check and leave, but I wanted to be patient. After some effort, a waitress took our dessert order. We also decided to try a “dessert” item, the black sesame seed mochi. Perhaps it was something else I wouldn’t order it again intentionally. If that was indeed what we ordered, any taste of shrimp was too delicate for me to detect. The noodles were about 2 inches long, roundish, and not particularly flavorful. We had a noodle dish, perhaps the shrimp rice noodles, that was on the dim sum menu. The pork buns were quite tasty, and probably my favorite item. The salt and pepper calamari was fine, but slightly overcooked. We tried five items, including a dessert. We ordered a number of additional items off the dim sum menu. Then the dim sum cart came by, and we selected some items, and the whole process that we had envisioned changed. I passed this to my wife, so that she could select items that she had a particular interest in. We received the dim sum menu, and I started to mark the items I was interested in trying. We arrived a bit before noon, and there was no problem finding parking or getting a table. We were on Alameda, and since we both love dim sum, and reviews were generally positive, we thought we would give it a try. My wife and I visited East Ocean Seafood Restaurant on a recent Wednesday for lunch. ![]()
